Poem: Pride

Take a moment
Pause what you are doing
Breathe deep
Be mindful of the moment
Where are you?
Physically? Emotionally? Mentally?
Are you where you want to be in life?
Reflect on your accomplishments today.

Then, ask yourself what you accomplished
in the last week
month
six months
year

write them down
post them on social media if you have to
share with a friend
have a drink
go for a walk
celebrate the minor successes
celebrate the big ones

and most of all
Be Proud of Who You Are

Poem: These Are The Days

Since most of what I've been writing for the last year or so on here are book reviews, I thought it was high time I finally get around to posting a poem. My writer's block when it comes to anything other than reviews has been strong until recently. Some poetry is slowly starting to work its way out of my system.

I started this poem on April 16th on what would've been the 12th anniversary of my relationship with my ex who passed away suddenly in 2013. While our relationship had turned into only friendship by the time he passed, he still holds a very dear place in my heart.

These are the days... for missing you.
These are the days... for standing strong.
These are the days... for moving on.
These are the days... for making waves.
These are the days... for living in the moment.
These are the days... for making memories.

These are the days... we've all been waiting for.
These are the days... we wanted to share together.
These are the days... with only your memory by my side.
These are the days... we dreamed of when we were young.
These are the days... we never thought would arrive.
These are the days... taken to the Extreme.

Five More Books About Infertility

On April 29, 2017, I wrote about a selection of books about living with infertility and published it during National Infertility Awareness Week. I had wanted to include more books and chose not to at the time because I was feeling emotionally burned out from the topic. It's an emotionally draining subject in of itself, and even more so because I was so strongly surrounded by it for a week, even though it was because of my own doing. Now that quite a bit of time has passed and I've been able to process my emotions and come back to this topic feeling refreshed, I'd like to share another list of books covering infertility.

Collection of Poetry by Jennifer Jackson Berry
Paperback, 96 pages
Published Nov. 2016 by YesYes Books

Recommended to me by a friend with primary infertility who also writes book reviews. The Feeder is a book of poetry that one Goodreads reviewer describes as "refreshing," and another as "brave."

Timons Esais left this in his review on Goodreads: "There is also some joy in here, but the collection as a whole brings one word to mind: brave. All poets risk self-esteem when publishing, all poets risk exposure, and it is very common for confessional poets (in these days of confessional poetry) to armor themselves against the risk by being defiant in their voice, being in-your-face, being I-can-say-this-and-you-can't-you-turd. Berry seems not to do that, at all. Here, too, she refuses to resolve. She asks, "How did I fall today?" and leaves us with that."

Everything Conceivable: How Assisted Reproduction is Changing Men, Women and the World

by Liza Mundy
Genres: Nonfiction, Science, Feminism
Available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle
432 pages, published 2007-2008 by Knopf

Liza Mundy is an award-winning journalist who wrote Michelle Obama's biography, Code Girls, and The Richer Sex.

In Everything Conceivable, per Goodreads she, "captures the human narratives, as well as the science, behind the controversial, multibillion-dollar fertility industry, and examines how this huge social experiment is transforming our most basic relationships and even our destiny as a species.

Skyrocketing infertility rates and dizzying technological advances are revolutionizing American families and changing the way we think about parenthood, childbirth, and life itself. Using in-depth reporting and riveting anecdotal material from doctors, families, surrogates, sperm and egg donors, infertile men and women, single and gay and lesbian parents, and children conceived through technology, Mundy explores the impact of assisted reproduction on individuals as well as the ethical issues raised and the potentially vast social consequences. The unforgettable personal stories in Everything Conceivable run the gamut from joyous to tragic; all of them raise questions we dare not ignore."

Non-fiction book by Beth Kohl
Available in hardcover, 288 pages
Published 2007 by Farrar Straus Giroux

This book was also recommended to me by a friend who went through IVF and surrogacy. Since I have not read the book myself, I am sharing the description from Goodreads with you:

"Injections + Appointments + Egg Retrieval + Embryo Transfer = Resources (Energy x Time x Emotion)" That's the equation that was projected onto the screen when Beth Kohl and her husband first showed up at the in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic. "Good evening," the program's psychologist told the gathered infertile couples. "Before you begin your treatment, you should know that this program is emotionally and psychologically stressful."

And how. In this marvelously unconventional account of her struggles to bear children, Kohl leads the reader on an oh-so-up-close tour of fertilization in America, and the ways in which science and miracle, technology and faith, converge to create life in the twentyfirst century. Along the way, Kohl wrestles with a new world of medical ethics: Should she "selectively reduce" the number of embryos successfully implanted in the womb in order to prevent a potentially complicated pregnancy? How much genetic testing of fertilized eggs is too much? What is she supposed to do with the seven embryos left over from the IVF process? When Andrew Solomon wrote "The Noonday Demon," he opened the world of depression to readers as no writer had done before. And when Stephen L. Carter wrote "Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby," many readers were forced to completely rethink race and prejudice. Kohl's spirited and rich exploration of "embryo culture" will completely revise how we see modern motherhood.

Non-fiction
by Geoffrey Sher, Jean Stoess, Virginia Marraige Davis
Available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook formats
222 pages, published 1998 by Facts on File

Another book recommended by several friends who went through IVF or are considering the process so I am recommending it to you.

As Goodreads states, "In Vitro Fertilization is a comprehensive guide to this increasingly common and successful practice for the 3.3 million couples in the United States seeking alternative means of conception. It discusses everything you need to know about IVF, including how to find and choose the best in vitro programs, what to expect as you go through the process, and what your chances are of achieving a successful pregnancy. The book is designed to prepare couples for the complex and emotional process of IVF, and it has been specially updated to cover the latest developments in the field. No one considering IVF should overlook this indispensable reference."

Fiction by Jodi Picoult
Available in paperback, hardcover, audio, and ebook formats
496 pages, published in 2011 by Atria/Emily Bestler Books

The only book of the list I've personally read, I highly recommend this one, especially for book club discussions. Written by one of my favorite authors (I literally have a whole shelf dedicated to her books!), Sing You Home follows the ups and downs of a marriage tormented by miscarriage after miscarriage.

Max plummets into alcoholism, yet somehow is able to heal again after his failed marriage with Zoe. A newfound unexpected romance brews for Zoe, with the opportunity for a baby. This scenario could include Max if he's willing, but he balks at the prospect, clouded by his religious beliefs and the financial costs.

Poem: I Go To Nature To Be Soothed

the sounds of nature, the sights and smells blanketed, surrounded by the reminder of the outside world, civilization. two somehow become one and blend together to coexist amidst the chaos. i am constantly reminded of the other.

i go to nature to be soothed, to recharge, to be mindful, to nourish, and to welcome my newfound calmness.

nature helps me think, re-balance. reminds me that i am just one small cell, one small part of this larger thing called life. nature soothes me. silences me.

nature makes me think. clears my mind. reminds me of what's important in this life. gets me to
put pen to paper, mind to matter and to forget
about life for awhile. i get to shut off.
recharge. reset. and,
remember who i am.

"I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order." - John Burroughs

Celebrating National Poetry Month with Mud Season Review

Writing poetry has been my private outlet of mine for many years. It's been overshadowed on this blog by my book reviews and infertility posts, and that is something that will change eventually. Even though poetry has been so important to me over the years in coping with my infertility diagnosis, and really life in general, I have failed to bring attention to the fact that April is National Poetry Month. It is also known as NaPoWriMo online, and is sponsored by Poets.org.

Perhaps I have forgotten to share my love of poetry with you because my lust for this written form has been satisfied through being a Poetry Reader for the last eight months for the Mud Season Review. It is a literary journal that grew out of the Burlington Writers Workshop in Burlington, Vermont. Just last week we celebrated the publication of our 28th monthly online issue, and Volume 3 print issue. The Mud Season Review publishes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and artwork, and accepts submissions through Submittable.

April is National Poetry Month

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month? It was started in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, and according to poets.org, "Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s
vital place in our culture."

Although we are halfway through the month, there are still some things you can do to celebrate poetry!

Poem: A Bucket List Consists of Peace & Happiness

create your own happiness
love yourself first
go to bed early
get up early
wake up with a smile

exercise
drink water
treat your body like a temple
you are its god
worship yourself

be modest
treat others the way you want to be treated
give respect to get respect
give love to receive love
read. write. educate yourself.

be kind.
create a bucket list.
complete your bucket list -
before you kick the bucket
travel

be happy alone
learn to live alone happily
be honest, yet tactful
be the person you needed when you were younger
understand that it's okay to not be okay

you are stronger than you realize
breathe deep
indulge yourself
find a healthy stress reliever
don't rely too heavily on any one person or thing

meditate
find balance
you're going to be okay -
because you already are

A Poem About Excuses

A poem I wrote using the single word "excuses" prompt  for a holiday dinner with the Burlington Writer's Workshop Middlebury Chapter.

Excuses.
Excuses?
What? I don't get it.
I'm too tired.

Excuses.
Nah. I've got other things to do.
I'll do it later.

Excuses.
It's later. Shit. I wanna read.
Now I'm tired. I'm going to bed.

Excuses.
I'll work on it in the morning...
Or maybe on my lunch break.

Excuses.
I thought of some good lines in the shower. Now I don't remember what they were.

Excuses.
Damn it. More good lines in the car driving to work.

Excuses.
I ate too much. I can't move.

Excuses.
Now I know there was something I was supposed to do. If only I could remember what it was...

Excuses.
I'll just wing it.

Excuses.
I don't want to. Not anymore. I have no inspiration to write about excuses...

Excuses.
I don't understand the point.  What is it again?

Excuses.
I don't have easy access to anything to write with.

Excuses.
I was born 2 weeks past my due date so because I came into the world late, I am inherently late to everything.

Poem: She's Tired

She said she's fine
And you took her word for it?
Let me tell you,
she isn't fine.

She's tired.
She's tired of being tired.
Tired of being broken down.
Tired of being strong all the time.
Tired of being let down, disappointed.
She's tired of the never-good-enough pain.
She's tired of always being judged,
always being held to higher standards than men.

She's tired of the frustration.
She's tired of always fighting an uphill battle
towards a glass ceiling.
She's tired of repeatedly telling herself she's good enough,
when no one else will.
She's tired of building others up
when she doesn't get it in return.

She's tired.
She's tired of being tired.
Tired of dragging herself out of bed.
Tired of going through the motions with no satisfaction.

Next time, don't take her word for it when she says she's fine.

Poem: Please Tell Me

The world is coming to an end
Everything is falling apart
I know they love me
but there is something
they are holding back

She knows something and won’t tell me
I ask her to tell me the information
but she tells me I have another appointment
I know she doesn’t want to hurt me
but she’s hurting me more
by holding it back

I talked to her
and she apologized
She told me she wanted
the doctor to tell me,
but that would be a month and a half
after the test I said.

It was bothering me
not knowing.
It was hurting
because it was my life
and she wouldn’t tell me.

Poem: Goodbye

Pulling this one from the archives. I wrote this poem when I was 13 and it is all the more relevant still today especially after losing Keith, my best friend, so suddenly on Saturday to a stroke. I miss you Keith, always will. I know you weren't all that sure about your faith in God, or at least in the Catholic church, but this is relevant anyway.

Goodbye
I see you hurting, I see you cry
I remember all the times we had together
And I hope you will cherish the memories forever
It was my time, I had to say goodbye.

I left so many behind when I had to die
I want you to know I love you all
You can talk to me still, easier than a phone call
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

I'm sorry for every single lie
I apologize to those I hurt
And to those I treated like dirt
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

You will always remember me and with grief sadly sigh
But please don't be burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the happiest times, today and tomorrow
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

Now I am free, God taught me how to fly
A friendship shared, a joke, a laugh, a kiss
Yes, these things with all of my heart, I will miss
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

It was hard, when I left this world, to say goodbye
for everyone who loved me or talked to
But I want you to know that I love you
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

Now I am living beyond the sky
But please don't grieve for me
I'm with God now, he set me free
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

You're sadness is understandable, don't be shy
Please don't grieve for me for now I'm free
I am following the path God laid for me
It was my time, I had to say goodbye

March Revival

I never understood love until I met you
and I was never in love until I met you
I never dreamed of being in love like I am with you
and when we were together I never dreamed I'd ever love anyone else

I learned a lot about love from you
and a lot about hearts
I've learned a lot about dreams
And a lot about time changing things

and somehow, since you've been gone,
this time around,
I can breathe again
somehow
I can dream again of other things
And understand, without too much pain,
that time will change
and just because we want it to be
doesn't necessarily mean we'll be together forever.
I’ve learned that
time has changed us, and always will
it's inevitable
And we can’t control time or love
though time will never change my love for you

8 March 2007
lives change
dreams drift away
guilt consumes me
stress overcomes my mind
concentration is nonexistent
so many distractions
as the words attempt to appear
out of the cloudy thoughts in my mind

pen to paper
mind to matter
and the concentration continues to waive
I look up and once again
our eyes meet and soon…
nothing else matters.

Impression (15 March 2007)
Closer to God
and comfortable with myself…
A stress free life
leads me to believe I need
to change something

Something’s telling me
to take a load off
clear things off my plate
re-evaluate the important things in my life

And I have discovered that you are
                and so is HE
school and family mean so much
so much more than work

What does that say about me?
What does that tell you about the kind of person that I am?

15 March 2007
So many pages, so little time
so little inspiration
the thoughts linger in my mind
the feelings exist
the words slowly appear before me.
With great difficulty
I attempt to express
the love that I feel
the happiness within
and the confusion, the frustration
that constantly lingers
somewhere in the cobwebs
                of my clouded mind

Poems: Remember When

And in death, we’ll remain forever
the dreams continue on
and I'm left standing here alone to find my own way
my head is killing me
and all i want to do is sleep forever
in your arms
with my body encircled with roses
and one single red rose
woven by the stem
through my fingers
folded over your soft, protecting hands
holding me together
for eternity...
in the midst of my confusion

Love you, Dearest
I can't get over the way I feel
I can't seem to let go of the pain
I can't seem to get you out of my mind
Surely, you will never leave my heart.
You've touched me forever,
leaving a mark on my hurting soul.
Past writings, I wrote dreaming of love.
But this is true,
this is real
this is what love really is.

I see you happy.
I hear you happier.
We touch, happiest.

Your touch is tender, sweet.
Your caress is gentle, sweeter.
Your kiss is soft, sweetest.

Sitting, closely.
Laying, closer.
Embracing, closest.

I like you, dear.
But I love you, dearest.

Remember When?
I remember when
I couldn’t wait to fall in love.
I remember when
There was this aching pain in my heart.
I remember when
It seemed like forever before I would fall in love.
I remember when
It seemed even longer before someone would fall in love with me.
But I didn’t know
Love is worth the wait.
I didn’t know
There is still an aching pain of wanting to be with you.
I didn’t know
That love was just around the corner.
And I didn’t know
That you were even closer.
I didn’t know
That love like this feels so special.
I didn’t know
It would be someone like you.
I didn’t know
There was so much that I didn’t know.
Now I know when you’re in love,
It’s more than knowledge, it’s a feeling.
I know when you’re in love,
You feel like you can fly.
I know when you’re in love,
You feel like you’re walking on air.
I know when you’re in love,
You feel like you can touch the sky.
I know I am in love,
Because my heart flutters when I hear your name.
I know I am in love
Because my heart races
when I hear your voice.
I know I am in love
Because I can’t wait to see you again,
I fall asleep thinking of you
I wake up thinking of you.
I know what I feel…
I want you to know what I feel,
I want you to know that I love you.

Changed, Forever
taken back several years
 where dreams existed
   without fear…
       people dream
until it’s taken away
   forced to take another path
   to follow another dream
     waiting for time to pass
so the pain can disappear
                    and new dreams will develop
    versions out of the old
                 like shadows looming over and
               covering the bright blue sky
that create a darkness in the world
       that speaks for itself;
    a darkness felt by many
through their own emotional let downs
and physical restrictions
          people fight
          some will live
          and some will die
and others, many, will never be the same
we’ll all be changed forever.

Poems: Time Will Change Love

I never understood love until I met you

I never dreamed of being in love like I am with you

I learned a lot about love from you

I've learned a lot about dreams
And a lot about time changing things

I can dream again of other things
And understand, without too much pain,

I’ve learned that

it's inevitable
And we can’t control time or love
and time will change my love for you

Poem Flashback to 2002

I am reviving some poems I wrote in high school. It's amazing how much time can impact your perspective on things. Eleven years after writing these, I can't help but wonder who I was writing these about, and almost want to cringe at the teenage angst I felt.

I Want
I want you to notice me
The way I notice you

I want you to love me
The way I love you

I want you to hold me
The way I hold you

I want you to want me
The way I want you

I want you to need me
The way I need you

I want you to see me
The way I see you

I want you to like me
The way I like you

I want you to notice me
I want you to love me

I want you to hold me, want me
I want you to need me

I want you to see me, like me
I want to be with you forever
I want to be in love with you for always

This One Time
Once I was falling in love
Now everything is falling apart
No one understands how I feel
No one knows me well enough
To help me deal
I’m trying to comprehend what is going on
Once I understand one thing, it’s gone
I’ve turned another twisting, winding curve
What did I do? Why such treatment I deserve?
He doesn’t know how strong my
Feelings are for him
The lights seem so very dim
I can hardly see; everything is so very difficult to see
How can he not understand?
How can this possibly be?
I have tried so hard to let him know
I must let him know again, it must be so
I will confess my true love and feelings for you…
©8 March 2002

Come and Go
I remember when everything seemed to be going my way
But now everything is falling apart
I am so confused
I am so alone
No one seems to understand what I am going through
I am falling out of love
We had the best of our lives together
I thought I would love you forever
But now when I am with you, the love is gone
A sense of security and understanding
All gone with the setting sunsets
It’s put to rest for eternity
In the rising moon and shining stars
My love for you
Will not rise again with the bright orange sun
Our candle has burned out
But the memories never will

Hazard
I have come to realize my dream
To become a better person; someone else
I want to be somebody else
Don’t let me get me
I am a hazard to myself
Don’t want to be my friend no more
Every morning I fight a war with the mirror
I can’t stand myself no more
I’m ready to shove myself out the door
I am a hazard to myself
I just can’t do it anymore
Living the life of someone else

Inspiration...lack of
A pen in my hand
A pile of papers on the desk
I want to write, but what about?
Why won’t you tell me what you feel?
What is so wrong?
Why does it seem everyone is so against me?
He doesn’t like me.
Never have.
Never will.
I will never be popular
I have never fit in.
I look in the mirror and cringe
Not at the physical image,
            But at the internal one
I don’t like what I’ve become
I can’t stand who I might be
I have forgotten who I was.

Mend My Heart
Every night I cry myself to sleep
Wondering why I am in a hole so deep
I can’t get out, I can’t stop falling
A bottomless pit, can’t stop bawling
I wish my tears would dry up forever
As long as I am falling, I can’t hold it together
I was so happy and so carefree!
Not I am suffering so. How can this be?
I felt nothing could knock my world apart
Now, piece by piece the pain tearing at my heart
I need someone, anyone, to touch my hand
            Let me touch the sky
Do this, mend my broken wings so I can fly
Be the wind beneath my wings and help me soar
No one knows what is inside me, a secret forevermore
I can’t confess, so many things I fail
I cry night after night and fill pail after pail
Who will hold me and not let me drop?
Who will love me and never ever stop?
So many problems, I can’t take this sadness
Make me better, bring my gladness
Make me happy, make me strong again
When there are days when everything is wrong
Anyone, be my strength, be my friend.
            Please don’t pretend.
Save me from the river made of tears I am crying
Deeper and deeper I fall, I’m holding on, I’m trying
How can everyone be so happy when I’m so sad?
That makes me so upset, so very mad!
Soon I will stop trying, forget, won’t care
Don’t stop me, don’t you dare
I am on the edge, try to help me and you’ll come too
You didn’t tell me this would happen!! Your fault!! You knew!!
Try to help me and I will save you!!
I will save you from this cruel, cruel world!!

Time to Say Goodbye
When she was finally gone
She took a piece of my heart
When she went to heaven, I fell apart
Year after year we found the other when we were lost
We stuck together, whatever the cost
Now I am lost, but I can’t find her. She’s gone.
I still love her. She’s still my best friend.
That’s why I am crying.
That’s why I am here to say goodbye.
And to say one more time that I love you.
©April 2002

WHY?
why do you say you understand me
when you don’t even listen when I speak to thee?
you hear me, but don’t comprehend
and then say you understand
would you please care about what I have to say?
listen to me
don’t say you understand
when you haven’t listened
to what I have to say
but no matter how I attempt to explain
you will never fully comprehend
what I am
who I am
what there is inside of me
©19 May 2002

Who's There?
who can save me?
who understands the problems
that I must endure, alone?
I am surviving
hanging on by one single string
hoping, wishing I could tear him apart
bone by bone, piece by piece
but he is not the only one to blame
he did leave me with one single kiss
I was falling apart;
beginning to lose heart
I couldn’t keep my life together
but still I hoped he’d love me forever
no one (not even me) knew what was going on
when I began to feel so alone, afraid, scared
when he left because of that, I spiraled
            down even farther
I was too foolish and scared to stop him
            from leaving me forever

Poem: Friday Night

I’m up against the rage of the storm
I’m determined to make it on my own
And I want you to know that
I’m willing and I’m able to endure the suffering
that only brings out the best in me
I’ve dreamt of better days
and I’ve made it through worse nights
I’ve reached for your hand to help me through
and all I’ve found is your face behind closed eyes
I’m only getting stronger, going through this alone
because every little bit of suffering
brings out the best in me

Every little bit
Every little bit of suffering
Brings out the best
From within the soul

And the depths of the heart
Are revealed to the world
Thru every little bit of suffering
Little bit of suffering
Every little bit of suffering
Can break the heart
And tear the soul

but in the end
Each and every broken piece
falls back into place
Because every little bit of suffering
Brings out the best in me

Poem: Habitat for Humanity: Spring Break Collegiate Challenge 2007

One week shared
on a mission under God’s eye
We are his hands in helping others
coming together to change a life
and we change each other’s too
Friendships made—for a lifetime?
Only time will tell,
or maybe just a brief passing
who came to us for a reason
to prove we have a strong connection
we didn’t know existed at first.
We were almost strangers
who chose to spend a week
doing something for a good cause
and we’ve come out with such a
great satisfaction and brand new friendships
                -maybe for a lifetime?
We walk away with so much positive energy
I smile wide, I nod
and I am so genuinely happy
All so happy with being accepted
Maybe this time…
maybe this time I can take this beautiful chance
this opportunity to run
and begin a new life
Thank you for the inspiration…

Poem: Time Marches On

taken back so many years, so long ago
memory fails us as humans
how must I remember?
how must I still feel that?
confusion rages my heart, mind, and soul
as it all turns to words on a page
pen to paper
mind to matter
and memory fades
as the clock ticks on to the future

time marches on
time marches on

and we see how life changes overall
and people continue to wait for it
                for the second coming
some say that some revelation is at hand
but as we wait, the winds blow on
the river still runs and the rain still falls
sunshine will return again tomorrow
as the moon holds her own tonight
                amongst the bright sparkling stars
shining through the everlasting clouds

time marches on
time marches on

and things seem to fall apart
shall things further fall
or shall a second coming satisfy those who’ve long awaited?
must humanity suffer for many more millennia
must we fight and kill
over who is right and who is wrong?
we all get judged in the end
so what does it matter who judges now?
why are we so different?
you’re right, I’m right
just different, not wrong
or maybe we are more similar than we realize?
some understand
                some accept
                                some overcome
yet some will fight and kill

time marches on
time marches on

some force beliefs on others
some turn the other cheek
so different, yet so similar that we conflict over those minute differences
                big deal? Yes.

illusions are apparent; arise again and again
experiences define who we are
we interpret it all so differently
sometimes pain. always hurt..
the memory still exists of all who’re lost
can the heartache ever be eased?
in time it will be forgotten
and only then will the sun and moon remain

Time marches on
Time marches on

Listen

listen to the music
listen to the heartbeat of the pouring rain
listen to the birds chirping on a summer's day
listen to the children laughing in the background
look for the musician, for he has a song
look for the rainbow, for it has a pot of gold
look for the shining sun, for it has a story to tell
look for the girl with the misty eyes
ask her if she wants to stay and share her story,
for if you listen,
she'll be loved.

Time Will Never Change…

somehow, since you've been gone,
this time around,
I can breathe again
somehow
I can dream again of other things
And understand, without too much pain,
that time will change
and just because we want it to be
doesn't necessarily mean we'll be together forever.
I’ve learned that
time has changed us, and always will
it's inevitable
And we can’t control time or love
though time will never change my love for you

Poem: America's Eyes

So many lives will end today
So many innocent people will die today
Every murdered person is one too many
When will we try to end this? Now is as good as any

As a group we can stand up against this
And give every orphaned child a kiss;
Tell her mommy is gone
Because daddy shot her with a gun

This is what is seen through America’s eyes,
One more act of violence, still people do not realize
They need to stop living in a world of their own
And make sure that Eagle Scout will have flown

The shooting at Columbine High
Has brought so many an unnecessary goodbye
Wake up America and realize
Too many people are dying before our eyes.
